Woman cops 34 demerit points in one incident in New South Wales


A woman has incurred 34 demerit points in one incident in New South Wales.

A woman has been slapped with 34 demerit points for one incident after being stopped during a police operation over the Christmas-New Year’s holiday period.
The driver, a woman traveling through the New South Wales town of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, was pulled over by officers during Operation Safe Arrival, according to The Daily Telegraph.
She was allegedly driving through a roundabout while using her mobile phone, with all four of her passengers - three children and one adult - allegedly not wearing seatbelts.
The woman received almost $1800 in fines and incurred a total of 34 demerit points for five offences; one for illegal mobile phone use and four for unrestrained passengers, during the incident.

The NSW double demerits period will apply until January 1, while in Western Australia, the Christmas-New Year’s double demerit period will apply until January 5.
Offences applicable during double demerits in WA include drink or drunk driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, running a red light, illegal use of a mobile phone, speeding, driving to evade a speed camera and driving a vehicle fitted with a device designed to evade a speed camera.
The double demerits period is designed to encourage safe driving on long weekends and public holidays, according to the WA Road Safety Commission.
